The Hamilton Music Award winner Chantal Chamberland releases her ‘Best of’ compilation album, Autobiography. Her trademark smoky, sultry jazz vocal is perfectly expressed in a wonderful diversity of genres, moving from sultry and soulful to bluesy and brassy with graceful ease. Her previous success with Soire´e cements her role as one of the finest female interpreters of jazz today. The compilation features tracks La Mer, Besame Mucho, Hit The Road Jack, Fever, You Are My Hero and more together with an all-new recording, Chantal’s take on Ed Sheeran’s heart-warming hit, Thinking Out Loud, performed with touch of tender affection and charm.
Chantal Chamberland has already released six albums and is well-known in Canada and Asia. The present volume is compilation, it seems, of tracks from those releases. If you examine the track listing you’ll get an idea of her style, but only an idea. “Feeling Good”, “Crazy” and “Fever” point to the stock middle of the road jazz canon that she seems to favor but it’s her treatment of these that catches the ear. Her voice is calm and moody, rarely being raised beyond a smooth crooning level, but in a manner that is highly intimate, personal and present. Instrumentation is relatively sparse, guitar (which she plays well), bass, drums, piano, with the occasional sax or horn, but the backings are loose, natural and embody the idea of accompaniment rather than competition with the singer. Production values here emphasize a late night club-date atmosphere, a singer, small band, and songs designed to make you relax rather than dance.

This is a rather different Chano from the one who first enthralled me with Hecho a Mano (Hand-made), his blazing flamenco/jazz mix recorded in Madrid in 1996 and released on Sunnyside a few years ago. On Con Alma he’s replaced the handclaps and multilayered percussion with a traditional jazz trio, bringing on world-class band mates George Mraz and Jeff Ballard. But his roots are still very much in evidence from the first track, a dynamic take on a traditional song—my dictionary tells me “La Tatara” means “sound of a trumpet as a signal for action.” There’s no trumpet here, but there’s plenty of action. Dominguez has a lithe, sensitive touch, impeccable time, and terrific sense of spacing; while he has chops to burn, he lets a lot of fresh air into his playing, unlike some of his more bombastic compatriots. “How About You” is bright and playful and his “Dolphin Dance” is a whirl through the clouds rather than a splash in the sea. Dominguez knows how to build excitement, as demonstrated in the title track; “Con Alma,” which features one of several fine solos by Mraz, who is justifiably famous for his lyricism and fat, round sound. Meanwhile, Ballard supplies just the right feel throughout: subtle, intricate, and ever-swinging, he gets to break out on a delightful, sparkling “Speak Low.” It’s a terrific trio and beautifully in synch. One of my favorite tracks is “It Could Happen to You,” which begins with a solo full of flamenco flair, then takes off for an extended joyride. This is followed by an intriguing meditation on Steve Swallow’s “Hullo Bolinas” which is both free and structured, highlighting the group’s versatility. The inclusion of strong Spanish compositions makes a nice mix with the familiar standards; Con Alma ia a rich and tasty feast, laced with salsa. Recommended.

Champian Fulton is a talented singer/pianist from Oklahoma who now resides in New York City. She learned music from his father who is a renowned jazz trumpeter and educator. Champian graduated from the State University of New York with a music degree in 2006. In this fabulous debut album, she shows the full extent of her talent: sunny, lovely, expressive and soulful singing voice and formidable, bebop-based piano chops. She is ably supported by fellow New York residents, Neal Miner on bass and Fukushi Tainaka on drums.
The daughter of jazz trumpeter Stephen Fulton, Champian Fulton had plenty of early exposure to the music through her father’s playing with his friends, among them Clark Terry and the late Major Holley. Champian began piano lessons at the age of five and as she grew interested in singing as well, she began accompanying herself. Forming her first jazz band around the age of nine (the Little Jazz Quintet), she re- located to New York City in 2003. Champian Fulton is a refreshing change from many of the singing jazz pianists of the past two decades, as she excels in both areas while never resorting to simply doing the minimum to get by in her interpretation of standards. She builds on the success of her 2007 debut Champian when she was backed David Berger’s Sultans of Swing. But this time it’s a trio date for Tetsuo Hara’s outstanding Venus label, with bassist Neal Miner and drummer Fukushi Tainaka, with Fulton playing and singing a dozen timeless pieces that were penned long before her birth in 1985. While Fulton’s voice is youthful, her vocals often incorporate the touches of a veteran, including a defiant interpretation of “When Your Lover Has Gone” that has a sassiness reminiscent of Carmen McRae (who too infrequently accompanied herself on piano, though she was a fine pianist), along with her superb vocal inflections and bebop chops in her driving setting “September in the Rain”. Fulton also masters slow ballads, such as Duke Ellington’s powerful “All Too Soon,” in which she communicates the sorrow of lost love desiring a reunion as if she has lived the lyrics. The one piece that is not as well known is “Whistling Away the Dark” (a superb ballad by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer, performed in waltz time), which Fulton skillfully interprets as if it has been a part of her repertoire since she began singing. The closing track features Fulton singing “Tea For Two” over Miner’s walking bass, before she and Tainaka join him for a swinging instrumental break. Champian Fulton is a gifted musician who is deserving of wider recognition.

This young woman born in Oklahoma captivates audiences in New York’s finest jazz rooms and in concert halls around the world. For this release she performs as part of a trio with drummer Kristian Leth and bassist Hans Backenroth.
Somewhere over the Atlantic, en route to a two week tour of Scandinavia, Champian Fulton received news that Sweden was closing its borders and going into lockdown, drastically changing her plans. With some unexpected time on their hands, Champian and her Scandinavian Trio (Kristian Leth on drums and Hans Backenroth on bass) took their new tour-ready repertoire and headed into the studio. The resulting album, “I’ll See You in My Dreams” (Venus Record) showcases the trio with instrumental numbers such as the title track, Horace Silver’s “Opus De Funk” and Champian’s original composition “Happy Camper.” Standout vocals include the unearthed gem “Every Now and Then” and the swinging Ahmad Jamal-esque arrangement of “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire”.

Among the many Tannhäuser recordings, this stands out as one of Konwitschny’s most compelling opera recordings, now available for the first time worldwide on SACD! The astonishing 1960 recording is remastered in the finest sound quality. Includes new liner notes and bilingual translations. Newly remastered from the original analog master tapes in the UK using the latest technology. Limited edition of 800 sets with serial numbers. This legendary 1960 recording, featuring a stellar cast, has been magnificently revived. Among Convitchny’s relatively few stereo opera recordings, this EMI label Tannhäuser—highly regarded alongside his contemporaneous “Flying Dutchman”—is not merely nostalgic for the good old days of German opera, but stands as an eternal masterpiece. The original master tapes have remained in excellent condition to this day, delivering astonishingly clear sound quality that feels like a contemporary recording. This is an outstanding album in both performance and recording. It utilizes a master digitally converted at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in Germany, with separate mastering for the SACD layer and CD layer. Includes new liner notes and bilingual libretto. A permanent preservation edition. Limited to 800 sets with serial number stickers. Franz Konwitschny’s (1901-62) recordings saw numerous stereo sources from the Berlin Classics original discs reissued in 2020. This high-fidelity restoration has brought into sharp focus his previously overlooked, exceptional musicality and qualities. The revival of his meticulously detailed conducting, preserved on the master tapes, owes much to this improved sound quality. While the number of recordings is limited due to the early stereo era, each surviving disc is a true gem. Among his scarce opera recordings, this “Tannhäuser” stands alongside his “Flying Dutchman” from the same period as highly acclaimed, featuring a cast whose strength remains astonishing even today. Moreover, the freshness of the sound quality in this reissue, including the singing, is astonishing—it’s hard to believe these recordings are over 60 years old. If subjected to a blind test, some might mistake them for recent recordings. Previous CD releases suffered from a hazy resolution that failed to fully convey their true value. I urge you to pay close attention to the vivid, revitalized music in this reissue, as if the fog has lifted. This is largely due to the excellent condition of the master tapes.
This time, we performed the latest mastering using a flat master created by digitizing the original 2-channel analog master tape from our home country at 192kHz/24bit. The master exhibited a well-balanced overall sound with minimal aging effects. Therefore, we prioritized preserving the original balance and focused on mastering from a musical perspective. This approach enhances the sense of distance and depth between instruments, improving spatial imaging. The result is a stress-free listening experience where you can fully enjoy the finest performances. Additionally, the booklet features new liner notes by Daisuke Hirose. For this series, the SACD layer aims for extended highs, soft nuances, high resolution, and a rich soundstage, while the CD layer strives for a cohesive, solid sound with a tangible, present-to-the-touch tonal quality.
