Analogue Productions (Atlantic 75 Series) Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Atlantic Records! A powerful, passionate and expressive album! Hybrid Stereo SACD Mastered direct to DSD by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original master tape After several sessions with Columbia and Candid, Charles Mingus briefly returned to Atlantic and cut the freewheeling Oh Yeah, which AllMusic says has to rank as the wildest of all his classic albums. Mingus displays all of his vigorous jazz feeling on this album; he plays no bass whatsoever, hiring Doug Watkins to fill in while he accompanies the group on piano and contributes bluesy vocals to several tracks (while shouting encouragement on nearly all of them). One of the really fine things about Mingus is that he always seems to keep an earthy touch no matter how wild the harmonies get, and that genius comes across with power here. Some of the colorful titles are “Devil Woman,” “Eat That Chicken,” and “Hog Callin’ Blues.” Mingus’ vocal selections radiate the same dementia, whether it’s the stream-of-consciousness blues couplets on “Devil Woman,” the dark-humored modern-day spiritual “Oh Lord Don’t Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb on Me,” or the dadaist stride piano bounce of “Eat That Chicken,” a nod to Fats Waller’s comic novelties.

Genre: Jazz
Format: SACD ISO + DSF DSD64 + Hi-Res FLAC

Venus Records is known to highlight little-known veteran American jazz musicians who play excellent music to this day and merit listening by a wider audience. Some of these musicians include Eddie Higgins, Archie Shepp, Steve Kuhn, and Claude Williamson. The newest member added to this distinguished list is Charles McPherson. Even though McPherson is an alumni of the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop from the late 60s and early 70s, presently he may be at the top of his game. On this release for Venus Records, McPherson is paired with the first-rate pianist Steve Kuhn. McPherson impresses with his personal tone and shining, emotional playing that is deeply rooted in bebop. This is an astonishing album by an astonishing artist.

Charles McPherson delves into a number of standards in this collection of timeless ballads, well accompanied by pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist David Williams, and drummer Leroy Williams. The alto saxophonist’s tone has a bit of a bluesy edge throughout the sessions, as if he is reminiscing about a past love. His heartfelt rendition of “My Ideal” stands out, as do his two interpretations of songs by Nicholas Brodszky, “Be My Love” and “Love Letters.” McPherson picks up the tempo with “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” though his tone doesn’t shift to a lighter mood. The relaxed mood makes this release perfect for late-night listening. The only drawback with this CD is the ugly cover photo, which McPherson denounced as very tasteless during a 2007 interview.

Lost Horizon: The Classic Film Scores of Dimitri Tiomkin / The Thing from Another World Suite is another of Vocalion’s very welcome SACD releases. The SACD features Charles Gerhardt conducting The National Philharmonic Orchestra – a quite fabulous recording which took place at Kingsway Hall, London in December 1975.

Although Tiomkin’s work in film had begun in 1931 it was director Frank Capra who provided the composer with the opportunity to score Lost Horizon (1937). The immediate success of Lost Horizon resulted in Tiomkin never looking back. Vocalion’s beautifully produced CD may be headed by a generous 23 minute symphonic suite from Lost Horizon, but there’s so much more to be enjoyed. Several of Tiomkin’s other major film achievements are also celebrated, including The Guns of Navarone (1961) and it’s triumphant prelude, the Howard Hawks western The Big Sky (1952) and the love theme from William Wyler’s Civil War melodrama Friendly Persuasion (1956). Another significant inclusion comes in the way of a bonus track and Tiomkin’s The Thing from Another World (1951). The Suite (10.41) consisting of Prelude, The Flying Saucer Under the Ice, Melting Sequence, The Hand, Plasma I, Plasma II, The Growing Plants, The Thing on the Walkway and Electrocution is a fine example of Tiomkin’s rare excursion into the Sci-Fi / Horror genre. The 12 page booklet contains the original (and extensive) liner notes from the original 1976 album, but it’s a shame, however, that they were not extended to include a little on Tiomkin’s The Thing from Another World – not only is it an integral part of this wonderful compilation, but it just feels like an entire page has gone missing. On the audio side of things, Vocalion’s mastering by Michael J. Dutton (from the original master tapes) is quite superb – but in all honesty, I was never in any doubt. (Disc total 56.59) Overall, Vocalion have once again delivered where it counts, a collection of reliable, high quality and in many ways, essential re-release albums – long may they continue to do so.
