Title: Dan Nimmer Trio – Modern Day Blues (2010) [Japan 2016]
Genre: Jazz
Format: SACD ISO + DSF DSD64 + Hi-Res FLAC

Dan Nimmer is an American jazz pianist and composer. “Modern Day Blues”, his fourth album for Venus Records, is another winning trio date, this time with his contemporary band mates – bassist David Wong and drummer Pete Van Nostrand. The program has a few standards, but the bulk of it consists of attractive compositions by jazz musicians, including cool gems like “Out of the Past” by Benny Golson, “Le Coiffeur” by Dexter Gordon and “Uh Huh” by Hank Mobley. Nimmer closes the program with his “Modern-Day Blues”, a powerful modal blues and definitely a highlight of this satisfying release. Recommended to fans of straight-ahead piano trio music.

Dan Nimmer Trio – Kelly Blue (2007) [Japan 2016] [SACD / Venus Records – VHGD-160]

Dan Nimmer Trio - Kelly Blue (2007) [Japan 2016]

Title: Dan Nimmer Trio – Kelly Blue (2007) [Japan 2016]
Genre: Jazz
Format: SACD ISO + DSF DSD64 + Hi-Res FLAC

Dan Nimmer is an American jazz pianist and composer. As the title suggests, Nimmer’s second release for Venus Records is a tribute to Wynton Kelly, who was a swingy, bluesy and funky genius and a groove master who worked with Miles Davis and others. Jimmy Cobb, the veteran drummer who played with Kelly in the historic “Kind of Blue” session, bridges the two generations and validates Nimmer’s efforts with his impeccable groove.

In 2004, Wynton Marsalis hired 21-year-old Dan Nim-mer for his quartet and for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. It is easy to hear what Marsalis likes about Nimmer. He has lights-out chops and is a deeply traditional player. Nimmer’s second recording as a leader, Kelly Blue, is a curious project. It is described as a Wynton Kelly tribute, but it is more like a channeling. Nimmer does a Wynton Kelly so exact it is spooky. He not only gets the elastic snap of Kelly’s swing, his harmonic ingenuity and his scurrying phrasing, he gets Kelly’s single most inimitable characteristic: his touch. Like Kelly, Nimmer can make every note pop like a champagne bubble. Nimmer provides lush, complete, immaculate trio versions of songs Kelly usually recorded with horns (“Autumn Leaves,” “No Blues,” “On the Trail”). His portamento portrayal of “If You Could See Me Now” is even more luminous than Kelly’s and is the highlight of the album. The songs that Kelly never knew (like the ultra-funky Nimmer original “Brimsha Man”) sound like Kelly has come back to earth to play them. It’s all great fun, but the question (as it so often seems to be for musicians associated with Wynton Marsalis) is whether Nimmer’s technique and intimacy with history will eventually lead to the development of a distinctive personal voice.

With prodigious technique and an innate sense of swing, his playing often recalls that of his own heroes, specifically Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Erroll Garner and Art Tatum. As a young man, Mr. Nimmer’s family inherited a piano and he started playing by ear; he was, if you will, “called” by the instrument. He studied classical piano and eventually became interested in jazz. In 2005, Mr. Nimmer became a member of Wynton Marsalis’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet, both in which he has been a member ever since. In addition to Wynton Marsalis, Mr. Nimmer has performed and or recorded with Jimmy Cobb, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon,Chick Corea, George Benson, Houston Person, Eric Clapton, Tom Jones, Jon Faddis, Benny Golson, Brian Lynch, Lewis Nash, Peter Washington, Fareed Haque and many more.

Daniel Gaede, Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra – Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (2008) [SACD / Tacet – TACET S 163]

Daniel Gaede, Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra - Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (2008)

Title: Daniel Gaede, Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra – Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (2008)
Genre: Classical
Format: DSF DSD64 + Hi-Res FLAC

Recorded in the exclusive ‘tube only’ technique by Tacet, this recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is something very special. The playing by Daniel Gaede and the Polish Chamber Orchestra is full of life, making this extremely well known piece seem fresh and new.

The German record label Tacet has become known for its no-compromise “Tube Only” nostalgic recording technique, using nothing but tube microphones and amplifiers. This approach adds a naturalness, warmth and vividness to an already remarkable performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Nowadays, musicians strive not only to convey the beauty of Vivaldi’s writing but also his dramatic way of accurately indicating each image of the season being depicted. The Tacet recording certainly succeeds in that respect. Violinist Daniel Gaede, conductor Wojciech Rajski, and the musicians of the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra fully realize the composer’s stated intentions. When they play the opening of La Primavera (Spring), I feel lighthearted and optimistic; when they play the opening of L’Inverno (Winter), I shiver with cold.

Daniel Chorzempa – Bach-Liszt: Organ Works (1970/2005) [SACD / PentaTone classics – PTC 5186 127]

Title: Daniel Chorzempa – Bach-Liszt: Organ Works (1970/2005)
Genre: Classical
Format: MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

This SACD from PentaTone was recorded originally in 1970, not long after he’d made his official debut as an organist. (His organ recitals are notable for being played from memory.) The performances were taken down in the then-new quadraphonic system & released on Philips LPs. But of course quadraphonic LPs were a less than ideal carrier for the 4ch sound on the tapes. Fortunately PentaTone, a company founded by ex-Philips personnel, has been reissuing quad recordings on SACDs remastered from those tapes & they sound spectacularly lifelike. They are, of course, in 4ch sound, not the 6ch that the modern SACD system is capable of.
